Hey Gang,
I may be pushing it a few weeks but this cold weather
is driving me nuts. It's time to flip the switch on Spring
and get out and have some fun. Speaking of Spring, the
Mentone Area Arts Council has some upcoming events you need to
know about.
On Friday, March 26, the Arts Council will present Hugh and
Carol Nourse, widely acclaimed naturalist photographers and
the southeast's most renowned authority on
wildflowers. Authors of the book, Wildflowers of
Georgia, they have served as photographers at the State
Botanical Garden of Georgia since 1996 and have received the
Medal of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia for
outstanding service and support. Their photographic works
appear in almost every publication involving the discussion
of wildflowers native to the southeastern United States. We
are very fortunate to have them come to Mentone to share
there knowledge of wildflowers native to the area and how to
photograph them.
The lecture begins at 6:30 PM at Saint Joseph's Episcopal
Church in Mentone. The following morning at 9:00 AM, Hugh
and Carol will lead a small group (limited to 15 people) on
a wildflower hike at "The Pocket" on Pigeon Mountain in
Georgia. This will be a great opportunity to learn about the
unique and beautiful plants that are native to our area.
The cost for attending the lecture on Friday night will be
$5 for members of the Arts Council and $10 for non-members
payable at the door. The cost to attend the nature hike is
$35 and pre-registration is required by emailing Neal Whitt
at
nealwhitt@aol.com. Space is limited so make your plans
early. This should be a great event.

On Saturday, April 17, the Arts Council will present Telling
Tales: True Stories of Travel, Trouble & Transformation featuring
Willy Mathis (pictured above) and the music of Lon
Eldridge. Willy is a storyteller, book editor, writer,
teacher, and gourmet chef. When most finish school, they
find a way to make a living that is fairly confining. Willy
didn't. He started walking-across India, Greece,
Yugoslavia, Taiwan, all over the world. Willy will share
his experience of enjoying more of what life really has to
offer. Willy's Tales begins at 6:30 at the
Crystal Lake Lodge. Tickets are $10 per person, $5 for
students. Seating is limited so make your reservations
today by emailing Neal Whitt at
nealwhitt@aol.com or calling 256-634-4837.
Well, that's it for now. As always, please forward this
email to anyone you think might be interested in attending
any of the above events.
See you out there!
